Siding Remodel
By Brian Perry

This is the next step in my Siding Remodel series. So far, We have ripped the old siding off, wrapped the house with Tyvek and installed the HardiPlank siding. Now its time to install the Fascia ( the finish piece that transitions from the HardiPlank to the Shingles), and the metal drip edge. We'll save the shingles for the next article.
Here is a list of materials and tools I used for this section of the siding project:
Miter Saw
Air Compressor
Framing Gun
6d galvanized Box nails for gun
Cordless Drill
tape measure
pencil
level
adjustable angle
2 1/2" exterior screws
two ladders with ghetto home made scaffolding
1x8x10 Cedar
Metal drip edge
The very first thing we did was attach the 1x8 cedar fascia. Since we are now in roof pitch territory, I couldn't just slap it up straight like the HardiPlank, so the first thing I had to do was find the angle of the roof and cut that angle into the ends of the fascia. I used an adjustable angle to do this.
( finding the correct angle is an absolutely CRITICAL part of this entire day, so take your time finding it!) So that I had the tightest fit possible at both ends under the eves I installed the two end pieces first, then gradually cut down the middle section of fascia until it fit tight.
I used the same 6d nails and nail gun to temporarily attach the fascia until all of my pieces were in... its important to note that the 6d nails were not long enough to permanently attach, but plenty long for a temporary hold and gave just enough wiggle room to get the drip edge in.
Once the fascia was up I put in the metal drip edge.. this was as simple of just setting it on, and tucking the pre fabricated edge behind, the cedar fascia. The drip edge is important to install. It not only protects your fascia, but it also keeps any potential water from the shingles above from dripping down the backside of your HardiPlank. Once its all in, I needed to permanently attach the cedar and drip edge using 2 1/2" exterior screws. The finished project looks like this:
The Cedar ran me about $25 for three pieces and the drip edge was a total of around $12. All in all, a very inexpensive part of the project. So far the total siding remodel project cost to date is: oh, somewhere around $537 (excluding tools)
Check in next Wednesday for the next step.. installing the cedar shingles.
